Provenance/Ancestry/Heritage::
Although pig shaped banks have been found throughout history, Piggy Banks originated having nothing to do with the pink, flat snout, short-legged farm animal.  The first known clay banks were made from pygg clay during the middle ages.  An orange colored, inexpensive clay, pygg was used as we would use plaster, glass, and plastic.  
By the 18th century, the pig-shaped bank emerged as the choice of money keepers. Made of ceramic and decorated with flowers, geometrics, and other designs, they were decorative and functional.
Mostly used by children, since the 19th century, piggy banks now refer to any child's money keeper that used a slot to deposit the coin into a decorated well whether made of clay, glass, fine porcelain, plastic wood or other material.
